Nooitgedacht Estate: A Wedding Venue Showcase by Chané Greyling

One of those is Nooitgedacht Estate in Stellenbosch. We've filmed here a few times and wanted to share some insights from our perspective as wedding photographers and videographers.
What Makes Nooitgedacht Estate a Great Wedding Venue?
Nooitgedacht Estate has a long history of hosting weddings, over 35 years in fact. It’s located in the picturesque Stellenbosch Winelands, which means you get that classic Cape Dutch architecture and vineyard setting that many couples look for. The estate offers a few different areas for weddings, which provides flexibility in how a couple can plan their day. It’s a place that seems well set up to handle all the different elements of a wedding, from the ceremony to the reception.
Best Spots for Photography and Videography at Nooitgedacht Estate
From a visual standpoint, Nooitgedacht Estate has some solid options for wedding photography and videography. The estate grounds are quite expansive, offering a variety of backdrops. The vineyards are, of course, a classic Winelands feature and always make for good couple's shots, especially during golden hour. We’ve found that the light there around sunset works well for capturing wide, cinematic shots for a wedding videographer.
The architecture of the main buildings provides a different aesthetic – more historic and grand. There are some lovely courtyards and pathways with old trees that create interesting compositions and shade, which is helpful on brighter days. We’ve used these areas for portraits and for capturing guests mingling during canapés. The gardens are well-maintained, and depending on the season, offer different greens and colours that can add to the visual story of the day.
Inside, the reception spaces often have high ceilings and good natural light if the windows are large enough, which helps a wedding photographer work with available light. We also appreciate venues that have pleasant getting-ready spaces, and Nooitgedacht Estate offers accommodation which can make the morning logistics simpler for both the couple and us.
Ceremony and Reception Spaces
Nooitgedacht Estate has various options for both ceremonies and receptions. We’ve seen ceremonies held outdoors among the trees, and also in some of their covered spaces. The outdoor settings are particularly nice because of the natural light and the sense of space they provide. For receptions, there are indoor halls that can accommodate different wedding sizes. These spaces are typically quite versatile, allowing couples to bring in their own decor and really personalise the look. The ability to use different areas of the estate for different parts of the day keeps the flow interesting for guests and gives us varied backdrops for our work.
Our Experience Filming Here
We’ve shot at Nooitgedacht Estate a few times, and it's always been a positive experience. The staff generally know the rhythms of a wedding day very well, which helps everything run smoothly. For us, having a reliable venue team makes a big difference in our ability to focus on capturing the moments without needing to worry about logistical hiccups.
One thing we've particularly enjoyed about filming at Nooitgedacht Estate is the variety of backdrops available within a relatively short distance. This means less travel time for the couple and us, and more time for capturing beautiful footage. It allows us to get a good range of shots – from intimate portraits to grander scenic views – without feeling rushed. The different spaces also mean that even if the weather changes, there are good backup options, which is always a relief for everyone involved. Whether it’s capturing emotional vows or the lively dance floor, the estate provides a good setting for telling a complete wedding story.
